Summer Road Trip idea from Montreal: Agawa Bay’s turquoise waters, pink sunsets and camping on the beach

The first time I camped at Agawa Bay was as we returned to Montreal from our road trip to Tofino. We needed to make a final stop before getting to Montreal. As I looked at camping options along the way, I saw rave reviews about Agawa Bay campground, which was located in Ontario, at Lake Superior Provincial Park. We quickly made a reservation for a night without really knowing what to expect. All that we knew for sure, was that we were lucky to be able to have a campsite as the campground was almost full and we were disappointed/slightly depressed that our month-long road trip was coming to an end. You know, that blues you feel when the vacations are over.

When we arrived at the campground, I can’t even begin to explain to you how my jaw dropped to the sand at how beautiful the beach was. It felt like we were in South America: the water was turquoise, the sun was shining, and the beach was… empty. We took our clothes off right then and there and jumped in the water before even setting up our tent. I could not believe my eyes. Needless to say, we extended our stay for three additional nights and Agawa Bay has since become one of my favorite places on earth.

Located at a 14-hour drive from Montreal, we have returned to this magical place twice over the course of 5 years and each time was as mesmerizing as the first one. Toward the end of the day, you can see campers get their chairs on the sand to watch the breathtaking sunsets that paint the sky in the most beautiful shades of pink, while enjoying wine or beer. Although the campground is almost always full, the beach is surprisingly always empty, so you truly feel like you’re the only person/couple/group there.

At night, we witnessed superb star-studded skies when the sky was clear.

If you are looking for a fun beach destination for the summer that you can drive to from Montreal, and are not afraid of the 14-hour drive, please do yourself a favor and book a couple nights at Agawa Bay Campground.

What to know before going there though:

  • The closest grocery store is located at an hour-long drive from the campground, so be prepared and do your groceries before arriving at the campground.
  • This is a very popular spot so make sure you book in advance.
